The Different Types of Book Binding

Saddle-stitching is a common method of binding books. It is also the quickest way to produce a book, but it’s not a very durable method. Pages are nestled together and can cause creeping. This method is less durable than other methods and isn’t recommended for books with many pages. It is also not very durable and can be easily damaged. To prevent creeping, the pages should be glued together before they are assembled.

Traditionally, this method involves gluing cardstock materials onto the pages. Once the binding is complete, the pages are then trimmed to create a ‘perfect’ look. The binding process has traditionally used EVA adhesive, but in recent years it has been replaced by polyurethane reactive adhesive. This type of glue is known for its durability and strength. It is an excellent choice for many types of books. When binding a book, be sure to read the material carefully before you start.

Double wire binding is another popular method of book binding. Known as twin-loop binding, double wire binds books in two directions. The book is bound on both ends by using a double “C” shaped wire spine that is squeezed together with a wire-closing device. The result is a smooth crossover and is extremely affordable. While the wire bind is cheaper, it does not protect interior pages. The pages will not lay flat when opened.

Case binding uses a paper spine that can be glued to the cover, and the interior pages are folded over the spine and glued to it. Finished products are then trimmed to give them a ‘perfect’ look. In the past, EVA adhesive was used in the bookbinding process. But in recent years, polyurethane reactive adhesive was used instead. It is a strong binding material, and it will last for decades.

The first book-binding manual was written by Christoph Ernst Prediger in 1791. It was published in four volumes and covered the cost, technique, and apprenticeship regulations. Unlike the modern techniques, the binding method was still a specialized craft. During the 1700s, it was not common for a book to be bound without a proper cover. For this reason, the binding process is a vitally important part of the production process and should be done well.
